Edith Stein: The Life and Legacy of the Jewish ...

“As a child of the Jewish people, who, by the grace of God, for the past eleven years has also been a child of the Catholic Church, I dare to speak to the Father of Christianity about that which oppresses millions of Germans. For weeks, we have seen deeds perpetrated in Germany which mock any sense of justice and humanity, not to mention love of neighbor. For years, the leaders of National Socialism have been preaching hatred of the Jews...but the responsibility must fall, after all, on those who brought them to this point and it also falls on those who keep silent in the face of such happenings.” (Edith Stein) To say Edith Stein lived a remarkable life would be a dramatic understatement. Born in Breslau (then part of Germany) at the end of the 19th century, Edith was raised as an observant jew, only to turn her back on religion right around the time World War I devastated the continent. In the wake of the war, during which she earned a doctorate and began working as an assistant at the University of Freiburg, she began reading the works of the legendary St. Teresa of Ávila, one of the most influential Catholic saints in history. As Stein continued to be influenced by St. Teresa, she was baptized as a Catholic in 1922 and began to turn her attention to becoming a nun. When she ultimately decided that would not be her path, she began to teach at a Catholic school in Speyer, a position she held until 1931. As it turned out, that period of time coincided with the rise of the Nazis, with Adolf Hitler working his way up the ranks of the Weimar Republic before taking full power in 1933. As the Nazis seized the reins in Germany and began implementing anti-Semitic policies, Stein’s Jewish background made her a target regardless of her conversion, and she had to quit teaching as a result of not being “Aryan” enough to qualify for a civil servant position. In the wake of that, she pursued her original dream by joining a discalced Carmelite monastery in 1. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Custom Bike Building Basics

Custom Bike Building Basics is the basic bible that at-home builders need to build and modify their own motorcycle. Before you can build that dream bike, you need a place to work and a set of tools to work with. Chapter One covers these topics and more, including the need for a quality compressor and a decent motorcycle lift. Home-built bikes and their components are built from steel, so Working with Steel, and Welding steel, are two essential topics. Cycle Source and Chris Callen start with how to buy the right steel and move on to setting up the welder and doing your first welds. Grass roots bikes are often built using a 'donor bike' as the foundation and source for the majority of parts. Chapters Four and Five offer tips on choosing the best donor bike, and scrounging the swap meets for the things that didn't come along with that bike. Once you have most of the parts, you still need to Create a Plan. Chris suggests you put it all down on paper, whether it's just a notebook of ideas or an elaborate sketch of the dream bike. With a plan and most of the parts, it's time to Build a Roller. This could also be called the Need for a Mock-Up chapter. This is a chance to see how things fit together in the real world, what might be needed for wheel spacers, and exactly how the fenders should mount. Fender fitment brings up the next major topic in this new Bike Building Basics manual - Sheet Metal Fabrication. In addition to sheet metal, anyone who plans to build a bike will need to build everything from engine mounts to handle bars, topics covered in Chapters Nine and Ten. The final topics are two that most of us find very intimidating: Upholstery and Wiring. With one chapter on each Topic, the mystery and fear are eliminated. Simple leather work is not rocket science. And basic wiring, especially for a bike without turn signals or electric start, is likewise a pretty straightforward operation - especially with the help of a good how-to chapter on each topic. New from Wolfgang Publications and Cycle Source Magazine, Custom Bike Building Basics is the one book you need before you tear into that donor bike and begin the process of creating your own motorcycle.

Writer Ivan Connor is desperate. His publisher has turned down his new novel, his agent is out of ideas, and the only person to turn up at his latest reading is his mum. He's deeply jealous of Francesca Brady, a hugely successful author of fat romantic books for fat romantic people, whose expansive hair and bright red lipstick mock him from posters everywhere he goes. He's also living at home since his marriage broke up, and he's just collected the wrong child from school. But one night Connor stumbles on a route back to the top, via a beautiful model, two deranged psychopaths, a multi-million pound publishing fraud, true love and utter heartbreak...
